Seven people, including a 3-year-old child, were injured in a shooting in East Baltimore near the Douglass Homes community, according to Baltimore police information reported by the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center and WBAL-TV.
Police said officers responded after 9 p.m. Wednesday to the 1400 block of East Fayette Street for reports of gunfire. Seven victims were transported to area hospitals, and officials said their injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said the early evidence appeared to show gunfire moving in one direction, but authorities had not publicly confirmed the number of shooters or a motive. Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public while officers maintained a presence in the area and continued the investigation.
The shooting prompted road closures around Fayette and Caroline streets while investigators processed the scene. Johns Hopkins Hospital, less than a mile away, said it continued operating normally.
Mayor Brandon Scott publicly urged anyone responsible to turn themselves in. Investigators are also likely to rely on witnesses, surveillance footage and physical evidence as they work to identify those involved.
